The present status and the future aspect of tissue engineering and regeneration: Innovations for Esthetic Implant and periodontal Surgery

Through technologic advances the ability to achieve esthetic surgical results with conservative techniques continues to evolve. The integration of recombinant growth factor technology into the surgical armamentarium is changing the approach to dental implant site development. This presentation will provide a clinical update on Esthetic Implant Site Development. The utilization of recombinantly engineered platelet-derived growth factor-BB (rhPDGF-BB) has accelerated the trend toward minimally invasive surgical procedures to preserve and enhance the esthetic foundation for dental implant restorations.

Cases will be presented demonstrating successful treatment of extraction socket defects and ridge augmentation procedures in preparation for implant placement combining rhPDGF-BB with bone replacement grafts (BRGs). The use of growth factor technology is reducing the need for autogenous bone grafting and allowing for less invasive procedures. Techniques utilizing combined hard and soft tissue grafting for periodontal and implant applications will also be presented.

LANAP: Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure. Laser Periodontal Surgical Therapy is a sophisticated surgical treatment for periodontal; disease. It is a patient-friendly approach to treatment that aggressively treats the disease with minimal patient discomfort. It is an alternative to conventional surgical procedures such as pocket reduction, GTR, and bone grafting regenerative techniques. This presentation will include human clinical and histologic research and clinical case management and results.

The key points are:

  • The use of growth factor technology is reducing the need for autogenous bone grafting and allowing for minimally invasive procedures.
  • Applying tissue engineering to clinical decision-making achieves optimal biologic and esthetic results for challenging dental implant cases.
  • Techniques with utilizing rhPDGF-BB for combined hard and soft tissue grafting will be presented.
  • New techniques such as LANAP® (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure) are changing approaches for minimally invasive periodontal treatment.
